Fat Burning Zone

The fat burning zone is a total joke and if you are relying on this type of cardio to lose fat than you are probably stuck in a rut or at a fat loss plateau.

What you need to do is give up the cardio and switch to short, burst workouts. Now let me tell you why. The first thing we need to do is look at the science (pseudo-science) behind the fat burning zone.

I'll admit, research shows that exercising at about 65% of your maximum aerobic capacity does in fact burn a proportionally greater amount of calories from fat, however, there are many things wrong with taking this info and applying it to a fat loss program.

First, exercising at that moderate intensity burns fewer total calories AND fewer fat calories than when you exercise at a harder pace for the same amount of time.

For example, let's say you exercised in the fat burning zone for 30 minutes and burned 300 calories with 60% of those calories coming from fat (180 fat calories). On the other hand, you could exercise at 75% of your maximum intensity for 30 minutes and you'd burn 400 calories with 50% of those coming from fat (200 fat calories).

As you can see, exercising harder for the same amount of time not only burns more total calories, but also more total fat calories. Its that simple as to why the fat burning zone is a joke and does not get great results.

But there's one other thing we need to talk about. Research shows over and over and over again that cardio in general (even when done at 75% intensity) is not very effective for burning fat.

So not only is the fat burning zone a big joke, but the entire premise of doing cardio for fat loss is a big joke. It is a big waste of time and cardio does nothing more than just frustrate thousands of men and women everyday.

Many folks are doing hours and hours of cardio with no results. They look the same today as they did 3 months ago, even though they've done 60 hours of cardio. In fact, one recent study of men and women who exercised at 75% intensity five times per week found that 26 out of the 58 subjects lost only 2 pounds in the 12 weeks.

Those results are terrible. But fortunately, there is a better way of exercising for fat loss, and it involves getting out of the fat burning zone and not worrying about burning fat at all.
